ON THE OCCASION OF THE NATIONAL REMEMBRANCE SERVICE
HONOURING THE VICTIMS OF THE TERRORIST ATTACKS IN BALI
ON 12 OCTOBER 2002

GREAT HALL OF PARLIAMENT HOUSE
16 OCTOBER 2003

His Excellency the Governor-General and Mrs Jeffery,
The Hon John Howard, Prime Minister, and Mrs Howard,
The Hon Simon Crean, Leader of the Opposition, and Mrs Crean,
The Families of Victims and Injured Survivors,
And Your Excellencies.
Ladies and Gentlemen.

I should firstly like to thank the Australian Government for the invitation to the Government of Indonesia to be represented here today on this solemn day of remembrance to honour the 91 Australians and people from many other nationalities who lost their lives in a brutal act of terror and perpetrated for no reason other than of their hatred for others.

Four days ago in Bali and in many places across Australia very moving tributes were paid to those who met such a tragic, undeserved fate. We hope that these brought some measure of comfort to those who lost loved ones and make 'the time to let go and move on' a little less onerous, although knowing that things will never be the same again. Out of this nightmare there is much you will have already gained, and you will be much stronger and better people.

On behalf of the Government of Indonesia and its people, I would like to express our deep gratitude to the Government and people of Australia for extending to Indonesia, and to the people of Bali in particular, their assistance in so many ways and for helping to rebuild what has come to be regarded by many Australians as a 'home-away-from-home.'

The Government and people of Indonesia are resolute in condemning the terrorist attacks as a travesty to the true teachings of all religions, which promote peace, tolerance, and brotherhood. As a frontline state in the global coalition against terrorism, the Indonesian Government and its people will continue to maximise the efforts to eradicate terrorism within Indonesia and around the world. We will continue to wage a comprehensive strategy to combat terrorism in the short, medium, and long term, which includes international cooperation, and addressing the root causes of terrorism.

We can assure you that justice is being delivered to the perpetrators of this evil.

Thank you.
