FOREIGN INVESTORS MAY BEGIN OPERATING IN ACEH IN 2008 : GOVERNOR

Banda Aceh - Foreign investors will most probably begin operating in the agricultural, fishery and industrial sectors in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) beginning next year, Governor Irwandi Yusuf said in Banda Aceh on Monday (16/04).

"Investors from China, Germany, Malaysia, South Korea, the Netherlands and Turkey have expressed interest in doing business in Aceh beginning in 2008. We have seen the foreign investors' serious interest in operating in Aceh," he said after attending a function at the Aceh Police Headquarters.

Irwandi said his administration was planning to hold a meeting with the United States Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jakarta in months to come to induce American entrepreneurs to do business in Aceh.

The Aceh governor, however, said the investment climate in the country's westernmost province would become conducive if political and security conditions in Aceh remained stable.

Irwandi therefore called on all people in Aceh to maintain the peace which had come into reality after the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) signed a peace agreement in Helsinki on August 15, 2005.

The agreement ended almost three decades of armed conflict in the oil-rich but underdeveloped Aceh (Antara, 17/04/07).
