On Thursday, 9 September
2004, at around 10.30 A.M, a bomb explosion occurred at
Jalan Rasuna Said, Jakarta, in the vicinity of the Embassy
of Australia, an area where business centres and foreign
embassies are located.
According to the preliminary report, several
peoples were killed and many others were injured. A more
detail information is currently being obtained and the Indonesian
Police as well as other relevant authorities are conducting
the investigation over the incident.
The Government of Indonesia strongly condemns
this barbaric act. Terrorism is the common enemy of all
peace loving countries in the world and Indonesia will accordingly
continue to work together with countries in the region,
including Australia, to uncover and bring the perpetrators
of the bombing to justice. The Australian Foreign Minister,
Mr. Alexander Downer and officials from the Department for
Foreign Affairs and Trade as well as the Shadow Foreign
Minister, Mr. Kevin Rudd, have departed to Indonesia to
extend their support to the Government and people of Indonesia
in facing this tragedy.
The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia
calls all Indonesian nationals in Australia to remain calm
and not to be provoked by irresponsible quarters intending
to worsen the situation. The Embassy further calls the Indonesian
nationals to closely keep in touch with all Indonesian missions
across Australia as well as the relevant Australian authorities
should they encounter any situation that may endanger their
safety.
