No. 36/PR/VII/2004

INDONESIA HOSTS JENKINS-SOGA FAMILY REUNION

1. Indonesia is pleased to have facilitated, at the request of the parties concerned, the family reunion of Mr. Charles Robert Jenkins and Ms. Hitomi Soga - and their two children. As it has already stated from the very beginning, the Government of Indonesia consistently considers the nature of this family reunion as a humanitarian issue and, hence, it should not necessarily cause any political or legal implication. The fact that this family reunion is a humanitarian affair has also been duly acknowledged by all the states involved.
2. Following close consultations with the governments concerned, and having the consent of both Mr. Jenkins and Ms. Soga themselves, it is with distinct honour that we welcome the family reunion in Indonesia today.
3. Beyond the humanitarian perspective, successful outcome of the efforts to realize the family reunion has the potential to promote further the confidence among all the countries concerned - which would hopefully help foster the conducive atmosphere in the Korean Peninsula. As a country that enjoy friendly relationship with all these countries, Indonesia is pleased to have contributed to this process.
