The Government of Indonesia
welcomes the result of a joint investigation conducted by
the Indonesian government and the US administrators on the
abhorrent attack against several innocent people in Timika
on 31 August 2002. The result found that the perpetrators
of the attack were Anthonius Wamang, one of the commanders
of the self-proclaimed Papuan National Troops (TPN), along
with 14 other members of the Free Papua Organization (OPM).
Wamang and his men armed with M-16, SS1 and Mouser attacked
a convoy of buses carrying the workers of PT Freeport Indonesia,
a US gold and copper mining company operating in Timika, leaving
two Americans and an Indonesian dead as well as nine others
injured.
The attack was not only aimed at disrupting
the operations of PT Freeport Indonesia but also at discrediting
the image of Indonesian government in the world. The investigation
also affirmed that the Indonesian military personnel were
not involved in the attack.
The Indonesian government has committed
to bringing those responsible to justice.
