PRESS RELEASE
No. 30/PR/VI/2004

LEGAL ACTION AGAINST GAM’S LEADER IN SWEDEN

1. The Government of Indonesia has noted with keen interest the recent legal measures carried out by the Office of Stockholm District Prosecutor and the Swedish Police against the leaders of the Aceh separatist group (also known as "GAM") who are residing in Sweden.
2. It has come to our attention that, in the morning of 15 June 2004, the Office of Stockholm District Prosecutor and the Swedish Police have taken legal actions against three persons, namely Mr. Hasan Tiro, Mr. Zaini Abdullah, and Mr. Malik Mahmud, by way of house searches at different places. It is understood that all three men have been named suspect for grave breaches of international law. It has also come to our attention that two of the suspects have been taken into custody for interrogation by the Swedish law enforcement authorities.
3. The Indonesian Government appreciates both the steadfast commitment of and the concrete actions taken by the Swedish Government, in particular its law enforcement authorities, to carry out due process of law against certain individuals who are suspected to be instigating acts of armed rebellion in the territory of Indonesia from their residence in the territory of Sweden. The Indonesian Government stands ready to continue its full cooperation with the Swedish authorities in supporting the existing legal process, including the provision of further evidence.
4. It is the hope of the Government and people of Indonesia that the continuing legal process against the leadership of GAM in Swedia could be concluded in a just and speedy manner so that it would contribute to the termination of acts of armed rebellion, acts of violence, and acts of terrorism perpetrated by GAM in Aceh and other regions in Indonesia.
