The Government
of Indonesia welcomes Iraq's decision to allow the return of United
Nations Security Council (UNSC) Inspection Team to Iraq. As a
friend of Iraq, Indonesia has continuously appealed to Iraq to
comply with UN resolutions.
Indonesia
is hopeful that this positive response from Iraq will pave the
way to a peaceful solution on the problem in Iraq.
Indonesia
maintains the view on the pivotal role of the UN, particularly
the UNSC, in seeking solutions to problems concerning international
peace and security, and will neither support any unilateral actions
nor approve of military attacks.
These views
were expressed by Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Hassan Wirajuda
during the meeting of foreign affairs ministers of former Chairmen
of the Non-Aligned Movement, and in a bilateral meeting between
Minister Wirajuda and Iraqi Foreign Minister Dr. Naji Sabri at
the UN Headquarter in New York on 17 September 2002. The two meetings
were convened amid the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
that started on 14 September 2002.
During the
meetings, Indonesia expressed its support for the territorial
integrity, national unity and political independence of Iraq,
in line with the principles of the UN Charter and international
law, and in due observance of Iraq's rightful concerns, including
the lifting of sanction imposed on Iraq.
