An unidentified
group of gunmen had indiscriminately shot at a convoy of teachers
and students of the Tembagapura International School on their
road from Timika to Tembagapura, Papua, Indonesia, on August 31,
2002 claiming the lives of three innocent people as well as wounding
eleven others. Some of the victims of this tragic incident had
been flown to Townsville Hospital in Queensland, Australia for
medical treatment. One of them is an Indonesian citizen. The Embassy
of the Republic of Indonesia in Canberra strongly condemns those
who committed such an abhorrent attack.
In line with
its diplomatic functions, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia
in Canberra has paid a consular visit on Mr. Louduyk WOROTIKAN
(47, driver) who is currently treated and in stable condition
in Townsville's Hospital. Based on his accounts, it is very difficult
to identify the attackers involved in this tragic incident, for
the area where the incident occurred was heavily covered by fog
and rain.
The Embassy
of the Republic of Indonesia in Canberra requests therefore all
parties concerned, especially the media, to refrain from issuing
conflicting and speculative statements that may hamper the Indonesian
Government's efforts to investigate and find those responsible
in order to bring them to justice.
