Jim Fox’s sound bite: “Let me just say that people in the Indonesian embassy [in Canberra] have been saying to me for three weeks: ‘We told you so’’’ is false and misleading (“The words on Indonesian lips: We told you so”, May 27-28).

There have been no discussions between the embassy and Fox on the state of East Timor.

His comment does not reflect the Indonesian government’s position on its forward-looking relations with East Timor as well as Indonesia’s total respect for East Timor as an independent nation.
