Granting protection to Papuans was wrong decision
Th Newspoll survey showing 76.7 per cent of Australians support self-determination or independence for Papua ("Small comfort for Yudhoyono in polling”,19/4) asks the wrong question and, as well as misleading the Australian public, shows a misunderstanding of the real issues surrounding Papua.
The current reality is how to deliver social justice and welfare to the people, which the Indonesia Government is determined to address through the package of special autonomy measures of 2001. The package offers the best solution to the people of Papua.
The survey question should not have addressed the issue of self-determination. Papua, within the Republic of Indonesia, is final and irrevocable. Indeed, the people of Papua, just late last month, exercised their political right by participating in local elections to directly choose their governors.
The poll shows a lack of knowledge of the Papua issue and fails to respect the sensitivities of those concerned in addressing the real needs and concerns of the Papua people.
