On Saturday,
24 July 2004, the Embassy of the Republic of
Indonesia in Canberra played host to a series
of an exciting festivities commemorating and
celebrating the 10th anniversary of Indonesia's
National Children's Day. The event was well
attended by people from all sections of the
Canberra Indonesian community including children,
students, and Embassy staff.
In keeping with the theme,
'I am Proud to be an Indonesian Child', the
day began with an opening ceremony led by children
in the roles of officials. The children's enthusiastic
participation was a way of developing their
feelings of love and pride towards their country.
With the formalities over,
the real fun began as children were encouraged
to join in a dance lesson and then have a discussion
with the Indonesian Ambassador to Australia,
Mr. Imron Cotan. The Ambassador was happy to
tell stories, gave advice, and then answered
the sort of questions only children could ask.
An enjoyable lunch was followed
by a wide variety of games and competitions
for children and adults alike. Some of these
included an egg and spoon race, a hoola hoop
competition, triva, a game involving lowering
a pencil on a string into a bottle, dominios,
karaoke, and the traditional Indonesian board
game of 'congkla'.
The day concluded with the
presentation of gifts to not only to the winners
of the activities, but to all those who took
part and had fun. After all, it was what the
day was all about.
