THE PRESENTATION OF A CHEQUE BY
THE MINISTER FOR JUSTICE AND CUSTOMS OF AUSTRALIA
TO THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA
TUESDAY, 20 APRIL 2004

The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Mr Imron Cotan, of behalf of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, today at a special ceremony at the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra accepted a cheque for Aus. $642,540.46 (approximately Rp 4 billion), from Australia's Justice Minister, the Hon. Senator Chris Ellison, on behalf of the Australian Government.

This was the first occasion that the Australian Proceeds of Crimes Act 1902 has been used by Australia to reclaim Indonesian assets in Australia and the first time that the Australian Government had repatriated assets located in Australia belonging to the government and people of Indonesia under the bilateral Treaty on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters.

The successful outcome reflects the high level of cooperation that exists between the two countries in efforts to overcome trans-national crime in our region.

Officials from the Attorney General's Department, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Public Prosecutions, the Insolvency and Trustee Service, Journalists, and Embassy staff attended the ceremony.

Here below are pictures of the handover of the cheque, the media conference, and the visit of Minister Ellison to Balai Budaya at the Embassy.
