THE OPENING OF
THE CENTRE FOR INDONESIA LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
AT BURGMANN ANGLICAN SCHOOL, CANBERRA
19 SEPTEMBER 2003

On the morning of 19th September 2003 at 9:30am, Burgmann Anglican School of the ACT officially opened a new learning centre for Indonesian language and culture, built in the style of a traditional Torajan house from South Sulawesi. The aim of the centre is to offer a diverse range of facilities to assist the students of Burgmann College in their study of Indonesian language and culture.

The opening of the centre was officiated by the Prime Minister of Australia, the Honorable John Howard, and was also attended by: Charge d'Affaires Ad Interim of the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra, Ms. Trini Sualang; members of Parliament; students and teachers of Burgmann Anglican School; and some other distinguished guests.

In the opening ceremony, Charge d'Affaires Mrs. Trini Sualang delivered a speech, in which she stated inter alia about the importance of maintaining friendship, and building understanding between Australians and Indonesians. In a similar vein, Mr Howard praised the initiative and commented on the importance of forming mutual understanding and friendship between Christianity and Islam.

The students of Burgmann proceeded to perform beautifully a Butterfly dance from Central Java as well as an Angklung performance.

Concluding the opening, everyone was invited to wander around the centre and admire the fantastic accomplishment of Burgmann Anglican School.
