Someone
Else's Country - Living in Suharto's Indonesia is the
title of a new book published by Pandanus Books (Research
School of Pacific and Asian Studies, The Australian National
University) in which Australian author Mrs Shirley Fenton
Huie presents a biographical account of her richly rewarding
but far from easy ten years living in Kalimantan, Java
and Bali, under the rule of President Suharto.
The book, covering most of the 1970s, was
officially launched on 3 September 2003 at the National
Library of Australia by Ms Jennifer Moran, Literary Editor
of The Canberra Times. On the front cover, the title description
overlays a painting of a traditional 'Rumah Karo' (village
hut) from North Sumatra by Indonesian famous artist Kartika
Affandi.
At the launch, Shirley spoke glowingly
of the unforgettable beauty of Indonesia and called on
the all those present not to miss the opportunity of visiting
this extraordinary country. Among the guests were a number
of Indonesians, Australians, 'friends of Indonesia', staff
from the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra, as well as some
members of 'Dharma Wanita Persatuan'.
Some pictures of the occasion appear below.
