OPENING OF "BEYOND THE TIMOR SEA"
EXHIBITION REDLAND ART GALLERY
APRIL 16, 2003

On the 16th of April 2003, Education & Culture Attaché, Mr Wahdi Yudhi, representing the Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, travelled to the Redland Art Gallery in Queensland for the opening of "Beyond the Timor Sea", an exhibition of textiles from Indonesia's Eastern Islands.

The exhibition is a wonderful showcase of some of the most beautiful pieces from the collection of Glenda and Ed Parker as well as a vivid display of photos detailing twenty-four years of travel to the Eastern Islands of Indonesia.

Ed and Glenda Parker were inspired to put their collection of textiles together after they "could not help but be impressed by the technical expertise demonstrated by the weavers of Indonesia". Ed and Glenda add that they "were overwhelmed by the hospitality of the Indonesian people" and "the friendliness with which they acknowledged us as 'our neighbours' even in quite remote locations".

The exhibition was officially opened by Mayor Don Seccombe of the Redland Shire Council who was pleased to have experienced the exhibition and expressed a desire to enjoy close relations with Indonesia in the future.

In his speech, Mr Yudhi addressed the significance of exhibitions like "Beyond the Timor Sea" as a reminder of the close relationship that has been shared between Australia and Indonesia in the past and the importance of continually strengthening this relationship into the future.

"Beyond the Timor Sea" will continue to be shown at the Redland Art Gallery until the 18th of May 2003. The address of Redland Art Gallery is below:
