RI, AUSSIE MPs REALIZE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABLE
BILATERAL
DIALOGS
Canberra
- Indonesian and Australian legislators realize the importance of open and
sustainable bilateral dialogs because they contributed to the development
of the two countries' mutually beneficial ties, an Indonesian diplomat
said.
The
importance of dialogs was incorporated in the conclusion of a meeting
between 10 Indonesian legislators and the Australian parliament
leadership, Senate members of the foreign subcommittee and the Foreign
Minister in Canberra on Monday (26/03), a spokesman for the Indonesian
Embassy in Canberra, Dino Rachmadiana Kusnadi, said.
According
to Dino, the two parties openly and warmly discussed various issues of the
bilateral relations include the terrorist threat and measures to deal with
it, illegal fishing in the border areas between the two countries and
inter-religious solidarity.
Meanwhile,
the Indonesian Ambassador to Australia and Vanuatu T.M. Hamzah Thayeb and
Counsellor for Political Affairs at the Indonesian Embassy, Samsu Rizal,
also accompanied the Indonesian legislators on the occasion.
Dino
said Ambassador Hamzah Thayeb accompanied the Indonesian legislators to
meet Australian Senate President Paul Calvert and Speaker of the
Australian Parliament David Hawker MP.
On
the second day of their three-day visit on Tuesday (27/03), the Indonesian
delegation in Canberra was expected to meet with a number of Australian
government officials to discuss issues at counter terrorism, fish
poaching, illegal migrants, transnational crimes, and the extradition and
transfer of international advisors.
Before
leaving Canberra for Sydney on Wednesday (28/03), the Indonesian
delegation was scheduled to meet with officials of the Australian
Education, Science and Technology Department.
Before
meeting with the Australian parliament leadership, the Senate, the
Chairman of the Sub Committee for Foreign, Defence and Trade Affairs of
the Australian parliament, David Jull and Foreign Minister Alexander
Downer, the Indonesian delegation had the occasion to attend a hearing
between the Australian parliament and the Senate.
The
visiting Indonesian legislators led by Agustinus Clarus consisted of
Mohammad Hatta, Pataniari Siahaan, Muchtar Aziz, Saidi Butarbutar, FX
Soekarno, Taufik Kurniawan, Bachrudin Nasori, Muhammad Zainul Majdi and
